How to find the Qibla
The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba at 21.4225°N, 39.8262°E. Because it is a great-circle bearing, it is not the same as pointing at Makkah on a flat map — from northern latitudes it bends east, and from the southern hemisphere it can point well north. To use a compass: hold it flat and level, let the needle settle on north, then rotate your body until the bearing shown above is in front of you. If your phone compass drifts near metal, calibrate it by moving it in a figure-eight. Related: full prayer times for every city, the Qibla direction guide, and prayer times in Makkah.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Qibla?
The direction Muslims face in prayer, toward the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
How is the Qibla direction calculated?
As the great-circle bearing from your position to the Kaaba — computed with spherical trigonometry, which is why it differs from the flat-map direction.
Does it change with location?
Yes — roughly 119° from London, 59° from New York and 295° from Jakarta, shifting more easterly the further north you are.
Is this Qibla finder accurate?
The bearing matches the formula used by prayer apps to a fraction of a degree; a physical compass adds its own magnetic deviation.
