Understanding twilight & golden hour
Civil twilight
sun 0ยฐโ6ยฐ below horizon
The brightest twilight. Enough natural light for most outdoor activity โ street lights typically switch on at civil dusk.
Nautical twilight
sun 6ยฐโ12ยฐ below horizon
The horizon is still visible at sea against the brighter stars, letting sailors take sights โ hence the name.
Astronomical twilight
sun 12ยฐโ18ยฐ below horizon
The last trace of scattered sunlight. Beyond astronomical dusk, the sky is fully dark for telescopes.
Golden hour
sun 4ยฐ below to 6ยฐ above horizon
Warm, soft, low-contrast light prized by photographers, roughly the hour after sunrise and before sunset.
Blue hour
sun 6ยฐ to 4ยฐ below horizon
The deep-blue window just before civil dawn and after civil dusk, beloved for cityscape and landscape shots.
Solar noon
sun at its highest point
The moment the sun crosses the local meridian. Shadows are shortest, and solar noon sits midway between sunrise and sunset.
Frequently asked questions
How are sunrise and sunset times calculated?
They are computed astronomically from each city's coordinates, using the standard convention that the sun's upper edge touches the horizon (accounting for atmospheric refraction). All times follow the IANA time zone database, so daylight saving changes are handled automatically.
Why is day length different at the same latitude?
Day length depends almost entirely on latitude and season โ two cities at the same latitude have nearly identical day lengths. What differs is the clock time of sunrise and sunset, which depends on longitude and time zone.
What happens above the polar circles?
Inside the Arctic and Antarctic circles, the sun stays above the horizon around the summer solstice (midnight sun / polar day) and below it around the winter solstice (polar night). City pages for places like Reykjavik and Anchorage show these windows in their timetables.
